Forest Tree MOC – Free Building Instructions

A forest layout often starts to feel convincing once it gains some height. This Forest Tree MOC is my original custom MOC, designed as a tall conifer-style tree that can stand on its own or become part of a wider woodland environment.

Its narrow trunk, layered branches and repeated green foliage create a recognizable forest silhouette without needing a large surrounding scene. Free step-by-step image instructions are available on this page.

A Layered Tree Shape Made for Woodland Scenery

The design grows outward in levels rather than forming one solid canopy. Brown branches spread from different heights along the trunk, with green foliage extending toward the tips. The upper branches stay shorter while the lower sections become wider, giving the tree its tapered outline.

At ground level, the trunk expands into angular roots around a small green base. That wider lower section gives the model a strong visual foundation while keeping the focus on the height of the tree.

From Heavy Roots to Fine Branch Tips

One of the most distinctive parts of this Forest Tree MOC is the contrast between the thick central trunk and the much lighter branch structure around it. The trunk is built as a sequence of brown sections, while thinner angled connections carry the foliage farther away from the center.

The result is useful for scenery because there are visible gaps between the branch levels. Instead of becoming a single green mass, the tree keeps an open woodland appearance that allows nearby models and background details to remain visible.

Follow the Forest Tree MOC Instructions

The image instructions below show how to recreate the original custom tree shown here, including the base, trunk, branching levels and green outer details. Following the sequence from the lower structure upward also makes it easier to see how the changing branch widths create the finished silhouette.

One Tree Can Become an Entire Forest

Used alone, the model can add a natural landmark beside a path, campsite, hideout or small landscape display. Repeating the same idea can create a denser tree line or forest background, while changing the surrounding ground details can keep each area visually different.

For a tree designed around a more urban setting, compare it with the Street Tree MOC and its free instructions. The two designs serve very different environments, which makes them useful scenery options for different sections of a larger layout.

Build Out the Woodland Around It

A tree becomes more useful when it helps connect several small scenes. Add low forest-floor details with the Forest Mushroom MOC, or place the tree near the Forest Path Gate to create the beginning of a woodland route.

For a larger story-driven area, the Forest Adventurers Camp MOC can sit deeper inside the trees, while the Picnic Tree Deck offers another way to combine a tree with a complete outdoor scene.
