LEGO Voltron MOC Guide: From Lions to Legendary Display

Build, Pose, and Roar: Creative Ideas for LEGO Voltron

LEGO® Ideas Voltron (set number 21311) landed like a lion in 2018 and quickly became a fan-favorite display with real presence: five posable lions that combine into one towering mech, complete with that iconic sword and shield. The official set is now retired, but the community keeps the legend alive with brilliant MOCs (My Own Creations) in every scale—from cute BrickHeadz to highly detailed non-transforming display pieces. If you’re hunting the official specs for reference while you build, 21311 is a 2,321-piece Ideas set released in 2018, and it’s listed as a retired product on LEGO’s site (you can still get the official building instructions there).
For collectors tracking history, market sites note the set retired around December 2019 after roughly 16 months on shelves.
Feature-wise, the classic loadout (including the sword and shield) is part of the official design—useful reference when you’re designing your own accessories for custom models.

Whether you’re rebuilding Voltron at microscale or engineering a big, non-transforming display model, the secret sauce is understanding proportions and joints. Voltron’s silhouette is all about heroic stance: broad shoulders, V-chest, long shins, and a confident A-stance. The lions’ heads form the shoulders; the red/green forearms should look sleek without bulking the elbows; and the yellow/blue legs need sturdy ankles for a planted pose. For MOC builders, that means choosing ratcheted Technic joints or strong click hinges, hiding a Technic “skeleton” behind SNOT (studs-not-on-top) paneling, and balancing color blocking (black core with bold primary colors) so it reads as Voltron at a glance. If you’re chasing transformation, plan tolerances early: hinges must clear armor, forearm lions need clean attachment points, and the torso must lock solidly to resist wobble when you pose with a heavy shield.

Tips for Building a Great Voltron MOC

  • Start with the stance. Mock up hips, knees, and ankles first using Technic ratchets or double-hinge stacks. If the A-stance looks heroic without armor, you’re on track.

  • Hide a strong core. Build a Technic spine with sideways pin connections so you can SNOT armor plates on all four sides without weakening the frame.

  • Lock the torso. Use pin-through-axle “keys” or perpendicular 3×3 T-beams to prevent torso twist when holding a big shield.

  • Forearm lions = clean cuffs. Plate-and-tile “cuffs” make the transition from limb to lion head smooth. A 1×2 bracket + curved slopes sells the rounded gauntlet look.

  • Color blocking first, details second. Get the black/primary color zones right (chest V, shoulders, shins). Then layer greebles (grills, cheese slopes) to suggest vents and panel seams.

  • Weapons with presence. For the Blazing Sword, sandwich a bar/clip spine with staggered wedge plates; accent with metallic tiles. For the shield, alternate round tiles and macaroni slopes to echo the iconic starburst.

  • Transformation? Prototype in grayscale. Use any colors while proving the fold/lock mechanisms. Swap to accurate color at the end.

Ideas to Display With Your Voltron

  • The Paladins’ hangar: Micro gantries, fuel carts, and a maintenance stand for the Voltron shield and Blazing Sword.

  • Castle of Lions façade: A compact backdrop (48×16) with a docking pad for the black lion; great for shelf depth.

  • Galra skirmish pack: Purple/black enemy drones and a small speeder; perfect action poses for photos.

  • BrickHeadz lineup: Pair a LEGO BrickHeadz Voltron with mini paladins for a cute second tier on your display.

  • Training arena: A tiled platform with energy pylons; add trans-light-blue tiles and whips for “sparks.”
